Frequently Asked Questions

When does Daylight Saving Time start and end?
DST begins on the second Sunday of March at 2:00 AM (clocks spring forward) and ends on the first Sunday of November at 2:00 AM (clocks fall back). Arizona and Hawaii do not observe DST. Full detail in our daylight saving time guide.
How many time zones does the U.S. have?
The continental United States has four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific. Including Alaska and Hawaii, there are six standard time zones. U.S. territories add additional zones.
What's the difference between EST and EDT?
EST (Eastern Standard Time) is used during winter months (UTC-5). EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) is used during summer months when DST is in effect (UTC-4). The same pattern applies to all zones that observe DST β€” see the full abbreviations reference.
Why doesn't Arizona observe DST?
Arizona opted out of DST in 1968 because the extra hour of sunlight during already-hot summer evenings was seen as a disadvantage. The Navajo Nation within Arizona does observe DST.
What time is it on the East Coast vs West Coast?
The East Coast (Eastern Time) is always 3 hours ahead of the West Coast (Pacific Time). When it's 12:00 PM in New York, it's 9:00 AM in Los Angeles.
Which states span multiple time zones?
Several states span multiple zones: Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Tennessee (ET/CT), Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas (CT/MT), Oregon, Idaho (MT/PT), and Alaska (AKT/HST). The state-by-state reference shows where each boundary runs.
